Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes provides a much loved and valued service for the community.
Blood bikes have been running in some parts of the UK since the late 1960's. They provide an out-of-hours courier service transporting essential medical items such as blood, pathology & microbiology specimens, medical notes, pharmaceutical products and donor breast milk between hospitals and healthcare facilities. This service is offered completely free of charge.
Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service (LEBBS) was formed in January 2012 by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, looking to emulate the services provided by other Blood Bike groups around the country.
With a coverage area incorporating the second largest County in England, an area of nearly 2700 square miles and a population of approximately 1.1 million people. The setup comprised of three separate stages.
In April 2013 we started operations, initially covering Boston and Grantham Hospitals.
Within six months the service was extended to include Lincoln County Hospital.
This was followed in 2016 when Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole Hospitals were added to our coverage area, which now means our delivery range includes, but is not limited to, Hull Royal Infirmary and to the regional NHS Blood and Transplant Centre in Sheffield.
or every ‘out of hours’ shift there is a team of volunteers ready to respond at a moments notice. A duty controller and a team of riders or drivers covering the north, central and southern areas of the county. When a medical item needs urgently transporting, the hospital places a call to the controller via a centralised number. The controller then liaises with the nearest rider or driver who makes the collection, and delivers it quickly and safely to its destination.
The team work on a rota basis, with a charity owned vehicle located at the rider or drivers house for the duration of their shift. This means that whatever the time, day or night, they are able to respond as quickly as possible.
